You're absolutely right, that supervisors (of any type of institution, not only microfinance institutions) should know what they are getting, that is, the quality of their data. And to improve data quality at the source, supervisors need to go onsite. When an industry becomes regulated, as it has happened to MFIs and cooperatives in many countries, the supervisor will have a period of working hard in improving the data, prior to rely on it to make the analysis offsite.
